What Is Sea Buckthorn Oil, and Why Does the Part of the Berry Matter?

Sea buckthorn is often described as an omega-rich berry, but its seed and pulp produce oils with very different fatty-acid profiles. Understanding that difference is the first step towards understanding why sea buckthorn appears in a skin-support formula.

Sea buckthorn has the kind of ingredient story that is easy to oversimplify.

It is a small, vivid orange berry from the Hippophae genus, and products made from it are often introduced with an impressive list of fatty acids, carotenoids and antioxidants. Before getting to any of those compounds, however, there is a more basic question worth asking.

Which part of the berry did the oil actually come from?

That matters because the tiny seed at the centre of the fruit and the orange pulp surrounding it can produce oils with quite different compositions. Calling both simply “sea buckthorn oil” can hide an important piece of the science.

One berry can produce two quite different oils

Sea buckthorn fruit contains oil in more than one place.

The seed can be processed to produce sea buckthorn seed oil. Separately, oil can be obtained from the soft fruit tissue, usually described as pulp or pulp-and-peel oil. Whole-berry preparations can contain contributions from more than one fraction.

The distinction is not merely botanical.

Reviews of sea buckthorn composition consistently find that seed oil contains a much larger proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids, particularly linoleic acid, an omega-6 fatty acid, and alpha-linolenic acid, an omega-3 fatty acid. Pulp oil tends to contain considerably more monounsaturated fatty acids and is particularly notable for palmitoleic acid, an omega-7 fatty acid.

Pulp oil is also generally richer in carotenoids, which contribute to the fruit's characteristic orange-red colour. Seed oil tends to be much lighter and has a different balance of accompanying compounds.

So two labels can both truthfully say sea buckthorn oil while referring to materially different ingredients.

That is why the plant part belongs on the evidence checklist.

Why does everyone talk about omega-7?

Omega-7 is the shorthand commonly used for a group of monounsaturated fatty acids. In sea buckthorn, the one attracting most attention is palmitoleic acid.

Palmitoleic acid is particularly characteristic of sea buckthorn pulp oil. Published analyses have found pulp oils with substantially higher palmitoleic-acid concentrations than seed oils, where the amount can be very low.

This is why statements such as “sea buckthorn is naturally rich in omega-7” need a little more context. They can make sense when discussing suitable fruit or pulp oils, but they should not automatically be attached to every seed oil, extract or vaguely labelled sea buckthorn ingredient.

There is another useful connection with skin biology. Palmitoleic acid is naturally present in human tissues, including skin lipids, which is one reason sea buckthorn's pulp-oil composition has attracted interest in skin and mucosal research.

But the presence of omega-7 is not itself clinical proof of a visible skin outcome.

Composition tells us what is present.

Human research tells us what happened when a defined material was actually used.

Seed oil brings a different fatty-acid story

If pulp oil attracts attention for palmitoleic acid, sea buckthorn seed oil tells a different story.

Seed oil is typically richer in the essential fatty acids linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid. Depending on cultivar, geography and processing, these polyunsaturated fatty acids can make up a substantial proportion of its total fatty-acid profile.

These fatty acids have roles throughout normal human biology, including as components of cell membranes and precursors within wider lipid pathways.

Sea buckthorn oils can also contain other lipid-soluble constituents such as tocopherols, phytosterols and carotenoids, but their concentrations vary according to the part of the fruit, cultivar, maturity and extraction process.

That variability is precisely why “contains sea buckthorn” tells you less than it initially appears to.

The useful questions become:

Seed, pulp or both? How was the oil extracted? What does its actual specification show?

Extraction can change the ingredient story too

Plant part is only one layer of identity.

Sea buckthorn oils can be obtained using processes including mechanical pressing and supercritical CO₂ extraction. Different processing conditions can influence the yield and composition of the resulting oil, particularly some of the minor compounds present alongside the main fatty acids.

The plant itself also varies.

Sea buckthorn grows across multiple regions and subspecies, and researchers have observed meaningful compositional variation between cultivars, geographic origins and stages of fruit maturity.

That does not make sea buckthorn unreliable.

It makes specification important.

When a supplement company discusses a particular fatty-acid profile, the strongest evidence does not come from saying “sea buckthorn contains it somewhere”. It comes from demonstrating that the specific ingredient being used matches the specification being described.

Traceability completes it.

What has oral sea buckthorn oil actually been studied for?

Sea buckthorn has attracted human research partly because its lipid profile makes it interesting for tissues where barrier function and moisture matter.

One placebo-controlled double-blind study examined sea buckthorn seed oil and pulp oil in people with atopic dermatitis. That distinction is useful because the researchers did not assume that seed and pulp oils were interchangeable. They compared the two different oil fractions as separate interventions.

This research provides background for scientific interest in sea buckthorn and skin.

But it should not become a HerbSouk claim that sea buckthorn treats eczema or atopic dermatitis. The population had a diagnosed skin condition, the intervention quantities and products were specific to that trial, and HerbSouk's current claims framework explicitly avoids disease-treatment wording for its sea buckthorn ingredient.

That evidence is useful for understanding why the ingredient has been studied.

It is not permission to turn a clinical population into a general consumer promise.

More recent research has looked at skin parameters directly

A 2024 randomised controlled trial evaluated a specific commercial oral sea buckthorn oil preparation in women over 12 weeks. Researchers assessed several skin measurements, alongside additional biological outcomes, and reported changes in measures including skin moisture, elasticity and other appearance-related parameters.

This is interesting human evidence, but it introduces exactly the lesson this article is trying to teach.

The study used a specific sea buckthorn oil product, with its own composition and dose.

It was not a study of every sea buckthorn oil.

And it was not a study of AstaBuckthorn.

This means HerbSouk can use the study to explain that oral sea buckthorn oil has been investigated in relation to skin parameters, but should not borrow its percentages or outcomes for the 300 mg sea buckthorn oil inside AstaBuckthorn unless the exact material, dose and specification can be shown to match.

Ingredient evidence becomes useful only when the ingredient identity travels with it.

Sea buckthorn research goes beyond skin, but that does not mean our article should

Sea buckthorn oil has also been investigated in other tissues where lipids and moisture are relevant.

For example, a randomised double-blind trial involving 100 people reporting dry-eye symptoms used 2 g of sea buckthorn oil daily for three months. The study found a smaller seasonal increase in tear-film osmolarity in the sea buckthorn group and reported some differences in symptoms.

That makes sea buckthorn scientifically interesting.

It does not mean AstaBuckthorn should be marketed as a treatment for dry eye.

The dose in that study was much higher than the 300 mg sea buckthorn oil currently present in AstaBuckthorn, and the exact identity of HerbSouk's oil has not yet been matched to the trial material. HerbSouk's current evidence framework keeps eye-treatment claims out of the sea buckthorn consumer story.

This is where an evidence-led ingredient article should show restraint.

The goal is not to collect every possible outcome attached to the plant.

It is to understand which evidence actually helps explain the ingredient in the formula.

Why skin is still the more relevant territory for AstaBuckthorn

AstaBuckthorn's primary commercial territory is skin and antioxidant wellness. Its current formula contains 6 mg AstaReal® natural astaxanthin and 300 mg sea buckthorn oil.

The two ingredients contribute differently to that story.

AstaReal® is currently the stronger clinical-evidence and antioxidant anchor. Its exact ingredient identity is better characterised in HerbSouk's current source pack, and there is human AstaReal® research relevant to skin moisture and appearance.

Sea buckthorn oil plays a more complementary role around the lipid and nourishment side of skin wellness. The current AstaBuckthorn Evidence Brief reflects that distinction and explicitly describes sea buckthorn as complementing the skin-lipid story rather than carrying the formula's strongest clinical proof.

That makes the combination easier to understand.

One ingredient does not need to duplicate the other.

There is one thing we should not pretend to know yet

This is where HerbSouk's evidence process matters more than marketing convenience.

The current formula confirms 300 mg of sea buckthorn oil, but the source documents available to the Project do not yet establish whether that exact material is from the seed, pulp, whole berry or a defined blend. The extraction method, final fatty-acid profile and batch-level CoA also remain outstanding.

A supplier communication does provide minimum omega specifications, including a substantial omega-7 specification. But that document identifies the ingredient only as “Sea Buckthorn” and does not establish the plant part, exact oil type, test method or batch relationship. The Project therefore correctly keeps those percentages as supplier specifications rather than consumer claims until the full technical documents are available.

This means HerbSouk should not currently write:

“Our AstaBuckthorn uses omega-7-rich sea buckthorn pulp oil.”

We do not yet have enough verified information to say that.

The correct public statement remains much narrower:

AstaBuckthorn contains 300 mg sea buckthorn oil, selected to complement its daily skin-support formula.

Sometimes evidence-led formulation means being precise about what you know.

Sometimes it means being equally precise about what you are still verifying.

Why omega numbers alone do not make a better oil

Supplement labels can easily turn fatty acids into a scorecard.

More omega-7 sounds better than less. Having omega-3, 6, 7 and 9 sounds more impressive than having two of them.

But a longer omega list is not automatically a better skin ingredient.

Omega-3, omega-6, omega-7 and omega-9 describe different fatty-acid families with different biological roles. And their relevance depends on the actual fatty acids, quantities, dietary context and material being used.

Sea buckthorn is interesting precisely because its different oil fractions offer different lipid profiles, not because it magically combines every beneficial fat into one universally superior oil.

That is also why the seed-versus-pulp distinction matters more than marketing language such as “complete omegas”.

The chemistry is more specific than the slogan.

Food and skincare still come first

No plant oil inside a capsule can replace the ordinary things skin depends on.

Adequate food intake provides essential fatty acids, protein, vitamins and minerals needed throughout the body. A varied diet remains the foundation for those nutrients rather than treating sea buckthorn as a replacement for dietary fat.

And when skin is dry, external care still matters.

A suitable moisturiser helps reduce water loss and support the outer skin barrier directly. Sunscreen remains essential for protecting skin against ultraviolet exposure. Oral supplements should not be positioned as substitutes for either.

That distinction is particularly important for AstaBuckthorn.

The role of inside-out support is complementary.

It does not make skincare obsolete.

Where sea buckthorn fits inside AstaBuckthorn

What we should not say is that the finished combination has been clinically proven to hydrate skin, reduce wrinkles, improve dry eye or deliver a particular omega-7 outcome. The current evidence does not establish those finished-formula effects.

That is why the ingredient story is valuable.

It explains why sea buckthorn belongs in the formula without pretending that inclusion itself is clinical proof.

The useful lesson is hidden inside the berry

Sea buckthorn is more interesting once we stop treating it as one orange superfruit with one long benefits list.

The seed and the pulp create chemically different oils. Seed oil tends towards omega-3 and omega-6-rich polyunsaturated fats. Pulp oil contains much more palmitoleic acid, the omega-7 fatty acid that gives that fraction much of its distinctive nutritional identity.

Then cultivar, geography and processing introduce still more variation.

So when you see sea buckthorn oil on a supplement label, the useful question is not immediately:

“What are all its benefits?”

Ask first:

“Which sea buckthorn oil is this?”

Because once again, ingredient quality begins with identity.

And the deeper the science becomes, the less useful vague botanical names become.
