What Is a Postbiotic, and Why Is EpiCor® Different From a Probiotic?

Probiotics contain live microorganisms. Prebiotics provide substrates certain microorganisms can use. Postbiotics take a different route altogether. Here is what that actually means, and where EpiCor® fits.

You have probably heard probiotics described as “good bacteria”. You may also have come across prebiotic fibre and been told that it helps feed beneficial microorganisms already living in the gut.

Then another word appears on the label: postbiotic.

The name makes it sound as though a postbiotic is simply what is left after a probiotic has done its job. That is not quite right. A postbiotic is a deliberately prepared non-living microbial ingredient, and understanding that distinction makes the whole prebiotic-probiotic-postbiotic conversation much easier.

EpiCor® is one example. It is a whole-food yeast fermentate made using Saccharomyces cerevisiae, or baker's yeast, through a proprietary fermentation process. Importantly, there are no live yeast cells in the finished EpiCor® ingredient.

That does not make it an inferior probiotic.

It makes it a different category altogether.

Start with the three words people keep mixing up

The simplest way to understand this area is to stop treating prebiotic, probiotic and postbiotic as three versions of the same thing.

A probiotic is a live microorganism which, when administered in an adequate amount, confers a health benefit on the host. The word live is fundamental to the definition. A bacterial or yeast strain is not automatically probiotic simply because it happens to be alive. The microorganism, dose and benefit need to be appropriately established.

A prebiotic is not a microorganism at all. Scientific consensus defines it as a substrate that is selectively used by host microorganisms and confers a health benefit. Many prebiotics are fibres, but not every dietary fibre automatically meets that definition.

A postbiotic takes a third route. The International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics, or ISAPP, defines it as a preparation of inanimate microorganisms and/or their components that confers a health benefit on the host. Here, inanimate means the microorganisms are no longer alive or capable of reproducing.

So in plain English:

Probiotic: living microorganism.
Prebiotic: substrate used by microorganisms.
Postbiotic: prepared, non-living microbial material with demonstrated benefit.

Those categories may appear beside each other on supplement labels, but biologically they are doing very different things.

A postbiotic is more than simply “dead bacteria”

This is where the definition becomes more precise.

A postbiotic preparation needs to contain inactivated microbial cells and/or their components. Depending on the preparation, metabolites produced during fermentation may also remain present, but metabolites alone are not enough to satisfy the ISAPP definition.

That distinction matters because the word “postbiotic” is sometimes used loosely for almost anything produced during fermentation.

Scientifically, it is narrower.

The microorganism has to be deliberately prepared into an inanimate form, relevant microbial components need to remain in the preparation, and a health benefit needs to be demonstrated for that preparation. Simply fermenting something does not automatically create a postbiotic.

This is why “postbiotic = dead probiotic” is an incomplete explanation. The final material matters, not only the fact that the starting microorganism is no longer alive.

So what exactly is EpiCor®?

EpiCor® begins with Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the yeast species commonly associated with baking.

Cargill uses the yeast in a specialised fermentation process with a plant-based nutrient medium. During fermentation, the yeast interacts with that environment and generates a complex mixture of compounds. The whole fermentation broth is then gently dried, which deactivates the yeast while retaining the broader fermentate rather than isolating one single molecule.

Cargill describes the finished material as containing a varied mixture that includes proteins, peptides, polyphenols, organic acids, nucleotides, beta-glucans, mannans and other fermentation-derived components.

That is what makes the description whole-food fermentate useful. EpiCor® is not simply a purified yeast metabolite and it is not live baker's yeast in powder form. It is the resulting preparation created through a specific fermentation and drying process.

HerbSouk's current evidence review now recognises EpiCor® as a verified postbiotic, based on official Cargill source material. The same evidence explicitly distinguishes it from a probiotic or live-culture ingredient.

Why does the manufacturing process matter?

With fermentation-derived ingredients, the starting microorganism tells you only part of the story.

Two manufacturers could begin with the same broad species of yeast and still end with materially different products. The microbial strain, nutrient medium, temperature, oxygen conditions, fermentation time, drying method and which portions of the fermentate remain in the final ingredient can all influence what that finished material contains.

For EpiCor®, Cargill describes a proprietary fermentation followed by a drying process that deactivates the yeast while retaining the entire fermentation broth. The ingredient is manufactured in the United States at Cargill's dietary-supplement facility.

This is also why branded-ingredient research should stay connected to the branded material.

You cannot take a study performed on EpiCor®, substitute an unrelated dried yeast powder and assume that the same evidence follows automatically.

The ingredient identity is part of the evidence.

Does EpiCor® add new microorganisms to your gut?

No, not in the way a probiotic does.

Cargill explicitly states that there are no live yeast or other organisms in the finished EpiCor® postbiotic. Its purpose therefore does not depend on the yeast remaining alive during storage, surviving the digestive tract or establishing itself in the gut.

This is one of the most useful practical differences between probiotics and postbiotics. A probiotic product has to maintain viable microorganisms through manufacturing and storage if it is to deliver the live organisms described on the label. A postbiotic does not have that same viability requirement because the microbial material is intentionally inanimate.

That does not automatically mean postbiotics are “better” than probiotics.

It means the two categories solve different formulation problems and should be judged using different evidence.

Is yoghurt or kimchi automatically a postbiotic?

No.

Fermentation is a process, while probiotic and postbiotic are evidence-based scientific classifications.

Foods such as yoghurt, kefir, kimchi, dosa batter and other fermented foods can contain live microorganisms, non-living microorganisms and compounds produced during fermentation, depending on how they are made, processed and stored. That does not automatically qualify the entire food as a probiotic or a postbiotic.

The postbiotic definition specifically requires a preparation of inanimate microorganisms and/or their components that confers a health benefit.

Fermented foods do not need those labels to deserve a place in the diet. They can simply be fermented foods.

That distinction keeps useful nutrition from becoming unnecessarily complicated.

What has EpiCor® actually been studied for?

This is where we move from what the ingredient is to what research has explored.

One randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot trial studied EpiCor® in 80 adults experiencing gastrointestinal discomfort and reduced bowel movements. Participants received either EpiCor® or placebo for six weeks, with the active group consuming 500 mg daily. Researchers tracked symptoms including bloating, gas, rumbling, fullness and abdominal discomfort, alongside stool frequency, stool consistency and microbiome measures.

Some outcomes were encouraging, but the pattern was not uniform.

Among participants classified as having moderate symptoms, the EpiCor® group showed statistically significant improvements in bloating or distension and feelings of fullness at some earlier study time points. Across the full group, stool consistency improved significantly after two weeks, while the increase in bowel-movement frequency did not reach conventional statistical significance.

The study also reported changes in parts of the faecal microbiome. But those observations should not be translated into a simplistic claim that EpiCor® creates an “ideal microbiome”. Microbial communities vary substantially between people, and changes in bowel transit can themselves influence which microorganisms appear more or less abundant.

The research tells us that EpiCor® interacted with digestive and microbial outcomes under the conditions studied.

It does not tell us that everyone will experience the same response.

One study is useful. It is not the whole answer.

The digestive study was a pilot trial, which is an important word.

The researchers themselves noted that several benefits occurred in specific symptom subgroups or at particular time points and recommended a confirmatory study before making a stronger gastrointestinal-discomfort claim.

The study was also commissioned by Embria Health Sciences, the company associated with EpiCor® at the time, and one author was affiliated with Embria. The clinical work itself was conducted at an independent research site in Belgium.

Manufacturer involvement does not automatically make a trial invalid.

It simply becomes part of how the evidence should be interpreted.

HerbSouk should therefore describe this as EpiCor® ingredient-level human research, with its dose, population and limitations intact, rather than turning it into a blanket promise about postbiotics or FiboBlend.

The gut environment still begins with food

The arrival of terms such as probiotics and postbiotics can make gut health sound as though it depends on buying the right microbial ingredient.

The everyday environment still matters more broadly.

A varied diet provides different fibres and plant compounds through vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, nuts and seeds. Those foods supply substrates for the microbial community already living in the gastrointestinal tract.

Fermented foods can add another dimension to the diet without needing to be marketed as postbiotics. And fibre remains important even when a postbiotic is present, because a postbiotic does not suddenly replace the substrates resident microorganisms use.

Sleep, physical activity, medicines, stress and changes in routine can also influence digestion and the gut microbiome.

A postbiotic is therefore better understood as one defined input into a much larger biological environment, not a shortcut around that environment.

Where EpiCor® fits inside FiboBlend

FiboBlend contains Sunfiber®, FenuLean®, EpiCor® and inulin and is designed around digestive regularity, gut rhythm and everyday comfort.

Within that formula, EpiCor® contributes something the fibre ingredients do not: a source-verified postbiotic component. HerbSouk's latest evidence matrix now approves the classification of EpiCor® as a postbiotic and identifies it as an inanimate whole-food fermentate rather than a live probiotic.

The current formulation also illustrates why the biotic terminology needs care. Inulin is being treated within HerbSouk's working architecture as the prebiotic component, although supplier-specific verification is still pending. At the same time, the current Project evidence does not identify a live microorganism or probiotic strain in FiboBlend.

So while HerbSouk has chosen Prebiotic + Probiotic + Postbiotic as a commercial positioning architecture, that wording should not be interpreted as evidence that the current documented formula contains live probiotic organisms.

That is exactly why this ingredient story matters.

It helps the reader understand what EpiCor® itself actually is, rather than asking one marketing phrase to explain the biology.

So what does “postbiotic” actually tell you?

It tells you something important about what kind of ingredient you are looking at.

A probiotic needs living microorganisms. A prebiotic provides a substrate that selected microorganisms can use. A postbiotic contains deliberately inactivated microbial material and must be connected with evidence of a health benefit.

EpiCor® sits in that third category.

It is a Saccharomyces cerevisiae-derived whole-food fermentate produced through a controlled fermentation and drying process, with the yeast no longer alive in the finished material. It also has its own ingredient-specific research, which is why HerbSouk can discuss it as more than simply “fermented yeast”.

That does not make postbiotics replacements for fibre, fermented foods or probiotics.

And it does not mean putting all three words on a label automatically makes a formula better.

Each category still needs a reason to be there.

Gut support is not only about adding more microorganisms. Sometimes the useful ingredient is what remains when a carefully controlled microbial process has already happened.
