Fibre is not one single ingredient. Its structure, solubility, viscosity and fermentation can all influence how it behaves in the gut. Sunfiber® is a specific form called partially hydrolysed guar gum, or PHGG.

You decide to eat more fibre because your digestion has been feeling inconsistent. Vegetables increase, seeds start appearing at breakfast, perhaps legumes become more frequent, and a fibre supplement joins the routine.

Then your stomach starts feeling different. There is more gas, more fullness and a sense that your otherwise sensible dietary change has somehow made digestion more difficult.

It is tempting to conclude that fibre simply does not suit you. But that assumes that every fibre behaves in roughly the same way once you eat it.

It does not.

The word fibre describes a broad family of carbohydrates with very different physical and fermentative properties. Understanding those differences is the starting point for understanding why one fibre product can feel very different from another.

“Fibre” tells you less than you might think

Two products can both contain five grams of dietary fibre and behave quite differently in water, during digestion and once they reach the large intestine.

Some fibres are largely insoluble and contribute physical bulk. Others dissolve in water. Some soluble fibres form a thick, viscous gel, while others remain relatively thin even at useful quantities. Fibres also differ substantially in how easily and how quickly microorganisms in the colon can ferment them.

These characteristics matter because they influence what the fibre actually does.

A thick viscous fibre may alter the physical consistency of digestive contents. A coarse insoluble fibre may contribute bulk. A fermentable fibre can become a substrate for microorganisms in the colon, producing compounds such as short-chain fatty acids as well as gases during fermentation.

None of those characteristics makes one fibre universally “better”.

They simply mean that fibre is a category, not a single substance.

Sunfiber® starts with guar, but it is not ordinary guar gum

Sunfiber® is Taiyo International's branded form of partially hydrolysed guar gum, usually abbreviated to PHGG. Taiyo describes Sunfiber® as a soluble galactomannan fibre derived from guar beans.

Guar gum itself comes from the guar bean and is naturally very viscous. This is why conventional guar gum is widely useful as a food thickener: when it meets water, it can produce considerable thickness.

That physical property is useful in food manufacturing, but it is less convenient if the aim is to put a meaningful amount of fibre into something someone is expected to drink every day.

PHGG changes that.

The “partially hydrolysed” part of the name describes an enzymatic process that breaks the longer galactomannan chains into smaller pieces. Published work using commercial Sunfiber® describes the process as treatment of guar gum with an enzyme that reduces its molecular size, resulting in a much lower-viscosity material.

The source plant has not changed.

The physical behaviour of the resulting fibre has.

Why does lower viscosity matter?

Imagine mixing conventional guar gum into a glass of water. Its long carbohydrate chains interact strongly with water, creating the kind of thickness that makes guar gum useful as a stabiliser.

Partial hydrolysis shortens those chains. Sunfiber® can therefore remain a soluble dietary fibre without producing the same degree of thickening. Taiyo's technical specification describes Sunfiber® grades with a low-viscosity specification, and its current product information describes the ingredient as tasteless, colourless and odourless.

That may sound like a formulation detail, but it matters to the person using the product.

A fibre routine only works as a routine if it is practical enough to repeat. A powder that becomes excessively thick, noticeably changes the taste of a drink or is difficult to mix creates an adherence problem even before we start discussing microbiology.

This is one reason branded ingredient selection should not be reduced to a fibre gram on the label.

Texture is part of tolerability too.

Solubility and fermentation are two different questions

A fibre dissolving easily in water does not necessarily tell you what will happen when gut microorganisms encounter it later.

PHGG is largely resistant to digestion higher in the gastrointestinal tract, allowing material to reach the colon where microbial fermentation can occur. Research describes PHGG as a soluble, fermentable fibre and has examined its effects on both bowel function and microbial composition.

Fermentation is a normal part of what happens to many fibres in the colon. Microorganisms use available carbohydrates and produce compounds including short-chain fatty acids. Gas can also be produced as part of that process.

That is why a fibre being fermentable is not automatically synonymous with a fibre being uncomfortable.

The experience depends on the fibre, the quantity, how rapidly the diet changed and the digestive system receiving it.

Manufacturer material describes Sunfiber® as fermenting relatively gradually compared with some other fibres. That is a useful mechanistic hypothesis for its tolerance positioning, but HerbSouk should not turn it into a guarantee that Sunfiber® causes no gas or bloating.

“Gentler” should describe a formulation rationale, not promise an identical experience for everyone.

Can PHGG influence stool form without simply making you go more?

One of the more interesting PHGG studies helps explain why digestive regularity should not be reduced to bowel-movement frequency.

A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involved 44 adults whose stools tended towards the looser end of the Bristol Stool Scale. Participants consumed PHGG for three months, and researchers measured stool form, bowel frequency and changes in the faecal microbiota.

PHGG significantly moved stool form towards a more typical range compared with placebo.

But bowel-movement frequency did not significantly increase.

That distinction matters.

A fibre does not need to make someone visit the bathroom more often in order to influence regularity. Sometimes the more relevant change is that stool becomes more consistently formed.

The same study also reported an increase in Bifidobacterium within the PHGG group. That provides useful microbial context, but it should not be converted into a broad claim that PHGG creates an “ideal microbiome”. Microbiome composition is far more complicated than maximising one bacterial genus.

What about people who already experience bloating?

PHGG has also been examined in a very different population.

A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study enrolled people with irritable bowel syndrome and compared 6 g of PHGG daily with placebo over 12 weeks. The PHGG group showed greater improvement in recorded bloating and combined bloating-and-gas scores than the placebo group. The study did not find a significant advantage for abdominal pain, stool frequency, overall IBS severity or quality-of-life scores.

That nuance is exactly what makes the study useful.

It does not show that PHGG fixes every digestive complaint.

It suggests that, under the conditions studied, 6 g per day was reasonably well tolerated and influenced particular symptoms in a specific clinical population.

For HerbSouk, the correct translation is therefore not “Sunfiber stops bloating.”

It is that PHGG has been studied in relation to digestive tolerance, bloating and bowel function, with results that depend on population, dose and outcome.

What do lower-dose Sunfiber® studies add?

More recent research has examined commercial Sunfiber® itself at lower quantities.

A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study involved 33 healthy adults, each completing 14-day periods with 3 g PHGG, 6 g PHGG and placebo. The commercial PHGG used was identified as Sunfiber® from Taiyo International.

Both the 3 g and 6 g periods were associated with changes in microbial composition compared with placebo, including an increase in Akkermansia at day 14. The study therefore shows that relatively low quantities of Sunfiber® can influence measured microbiome composition under the experimental conditions used.

But again, the interpretation needs restraint.

A measurable shift in the relative abundance of one microorganism is not the same thing as a guaranteed improvement in digestive comfort. It also does not prove that another multi-ingredient product containing Sunfiber® will reproduce that response.

The ingredient was studied.

Is Sunfiber® a prebiotic?

There is a useful distinction here between what the external scientific literature supports and what HerbSouk has formally source-approved.

PHGG is described in peer-reviewed research as a prebiotic fibre, and commercial Sunfiber® research has demonstrated changes in microbial composition after consumption. Taiyo also positions Sunfiber® as a prebiotic ingredient.

However, HerbSouk's current Project Source Register still lists the original Sunfiber® manufacturer dossier and trademark guidance as missing, including the source verification required for identity, standardisation and approved category wording.

That means the science can be discussed here as ingredient education, but final consumer-facing product and packaging claims should still pass through the Project's formal source and claims review.

That is not unnecessary caution.

It is the difference between understanding a body of research and approving a commercial claim.

Why can fibre still cause discomfort even when the fibre itself is well tolerated?

Because the ingredient is only one variable.

If your fibre intake has gone from relatively low to much higher within three days, your gut is responding to the total dietary change, not only the powder in your glass.

Perhaps breakfast now has oats, chia and fruit. Lunch contains legumes and a large raw salad. Snacks include nuts. Dinner has more vegetables. Then a fibre supplement is added on top.

Any individual element may be reasonable.

Together, they represent a considerable increase in material reaching the gastrointestinal tract and, depending on the fibres involved, more substrate available for microbial fermentation.

This is why even a fibre with a useful tolerance profile should be introduced in the context of the whole diet.

A “gentle fibre” cannot cancel out an aggressive change in the rest of your routine.

Build the fibre routine gradually

Whole foods should remain the foundation. Vegetables, fruit, legumes, whole grains, nuts and seeds provide different fibre structures alongside nutrients and plant compounds that an isolated fibre powder cannot reproduce.

If you are increasing fibre, give your digestive system enough consistency to understand the change.

Add new sources progressively rather than changing breakfast, lunch, dinner and supplementation all at once. Keep fluid intake reasonably consistent. And notice whether discomfort appears after one specific change or only after the total fibre load has become much larger.

This approach is especially useful for the person who has already tried to “eat healthier” and concluded that fibre makes them feel worse.

The better question is often not:

“Can I tolerate fibre?”

It is: “Which fibre, in what quantity, and how quickly did I introduce it?”

Where Sunfiber® fits within Fiboblend

Within that broader formula architecture, Sunfiber® is the ingredient most closely connected with the PHGG and soluble-fibre story.

That does not mean every finding from standalone PHGG or Sunfiber® research becomes a Fiboblend claim. There is another important limitation in the current evidence set: the final amount of Sunfiber® in each Fiboblend sachet should not yet be published from the older working formulation. So this article should explain why Sunfiber® was selected as part of the formulation logic, while the finished-product page carries only quantities and claims that have completed final verification.

Explore Fiboblend

The useful question is not simply “How much fibre?”

Fibre recommendations are often reduced to one number.

But your digestive system experiences much more than the gram total.

It experiences the fibre's structure, whether it dissolves, whether it becomes viscous, how microbes ferment it, how much you consumed and how quickly the rest of your diet changed at the same time.

Sunfiber® is useful precisely because it illustrates that distinction. It begins with guar, but partial hydrolysis changes how the material behaves physically. It remains a soluble, fermentable fibre while becoming much lower in viscosity than conventional guar gum, and PHGG has been studied across stool consistency, digestive symptoms and microbiome outcomes.

None of that means it will feel identical for every person.

And it certainly does not mean the goal should be to add as much fibre as possible as quickly as possible.

The better routine is the one you can actually maintain.

Because the most useful fibre is not necessarily the fibre with the biggest number on the label. It is the one whose properties make sense for the job you are asking it to do.
