You turn a supplement pack around and scan the ingredient list.
Fenugreek. Guar fibre. Ashwagandha. Iron. Astaxanthin.
You recognise the ingredient, so naturally, you assume you understand what the product contains.
But an ingredient name is only the beginning.
Two formulas can mention the same plant or nutrient while using materials that differ in their origin, plant part, processing method, concentration and tested composition.

1. The Same Plant Can Produce Different Ingredients
A botanical ingredient is shaped by more than its common name.
Its composition may be influenced by:
- The precise plant species
- The part of the plant used
- Where and how it was grown
- When it was harvested
- How it was stored
- The extraction or processing method
- The compounds retained in the finished material
Researchers studying botanical authentication have noted that plant-derived products can vary considerably in quality and chemical composition. A label that says “fenugreek” could refer to:
